Dr. Raymond Lai obtained his MD and PhD degrees and completed his general pathology residency training at the University of Alberta. He then completed a hematopathology fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. In 2000-2003, Dr. Lai served as a staff hematopathologist and assistant professor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

In 2003, he returned to Edmonton and became director of the Section of Molecular Pathology, University of Alberta. Dr. Lai is a lymphoma pathology consultant for northern Alberta, runs an active research laboratory at the Cross Cancer Institute and continues his academic commitments at the University of Alberta. Dr. Lai served a term as a Medical Director of DynaLIFE from 2010 to 2021.
