The screening test for colorectal cancer is changing on November
18, 2013. The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) will replace the fecal
occult blood test (FOBT) as the laboratory screening test. The FIT collection
is simpler for patients - only one specimen collection is
required rather than the three collections on consecutive days recommended for
FOBT. The FIT has no dietary or medication requirements whereas the current
FOBT requires cessation of vitamin C supplements for 3 days prior to the start
of and during collection. Starting November 18, 2013 patients
with a requisition having a FOBT request will be given a FIT collection kit.
The FIT collection kits will be available at all
DynaLIFEDx patient care centres and
northern hospital outpatient collection laboratories. FOBT specimens on cards
will be accepted until December 31, 2013. - Posted 07
