1. Collect 1 - 2 mL in each of 3 - 4 sterile, screw top tubes and label with order collected (i.e. #1, #2 . . .)
  2. Ensure all tubes are labeled with
    1. minimum of 2 patient identifiers as per the specimen acceptance criteria,
    2. the date and time of collection and
    3. the specimen source (e.g. CSF lumbar, CSF shunt . . .)
  3. Ensure that the accompanying requisition has complete information.
    1. If only a small volume of CSF was collected, indicate which test(s) are clinically most important.
    2. If Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD) is suspected, write this in the clinical history.
  4. Transport to the laboratory immediately (packaging instructions). Do not store.
